Rosacea: a skin disease of the face that affects the quality of life of patients
Rosacea is a chronic and progressive dermatological disease that manifests as centrofacial erythema and tends to worsen over time. The two most common forms of rosacea (vascular and papulopustular) mainly affect women aged 30 to 50 years. Although it is more easily diagnosed in patients with fair skin, rosacea affects all skin types.
The etiology of this inflammatory disease remains poorly understood but seems to involve dysregulation of the immune and neurovascular systems, and increased skin colonization by mites. Rosacea causes vasomotor flushing that is often triggered by sun exposure, temperature variations, hot drinks, and spicy food. The resulting redness and telangiectasias exacerbate facial skin sensitivity. Dryness, skin burning sensations, and persistent redness have a particularly large impact on patient quality of life. Moreover, papules and pustules may also appear on the nose and cheeks of patients with papulopustular rosacea.
A new treatment to relieve the symptoms of rosacea
Our medical communication agency assisted A-Derma laboratories, Pierre Fabre Dermo-Cosmétique, in the writing of a scientific article about a facial skin care product containing protein-free sap extruded from Rhealba® oat plantlets and mandarin extract, which has been developed by their laboratories as a supportive treatment to relieve rosacea symptoms. The tolerance and clinical effectiveness of this product were evaluated in three clinical studies including 105 adult patients who had an erythematotelangiectatic form of rosacea (with or without prior surgical procedure), or a papulopustular form of rosacea (treated with oral or topic therapies). The results of all of these studies were the subject of a supplement published in the “Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology” (JEADV) this summer.
